A major refurbishment is set to begin on the Titirangi War Memorial Hall and Library to create a weathertight, stable and more sustainable building.

Construction will begin on Tuesday 1 July. Titirangi Library, housed inside the same building, will be closed from Monday 16 June to enable the removal of books and relocation of furniture to a secure storage facility.

The beloved community facility will be temporarily closed for 12 months while the work takes place.

“This exciting project will ensure the longevity of our much-loved community hall and library, so the people of Titirangi can continue to use and enjoy it for years to come,” says Waitākere Ranges Local Board chair Greg Presland.

A mobile book bus is confirmed for the duration of construction. It will be situated in the library carpark, with hours of operation and specific services to be confirmed.

A range of programmes will continue to be offered at other local community facilities and locations. Library users are welcome to visit any Auckland Council library for full library services, including Glen Eden Library.

Titirangi Library staff will be relocated to the mobile book bus and be redeployed to Glen Eden Library to support the expected increase in visitors.

“I am pleased that the book bus will be stationed at the library site so that some library services will still available,” says Greg.

“I understand that the disruption caused will be frustrating. Can I thank you in advance for your patience while this necessary work takes place.”

Ensuing longevity

The refurbishment will resolve weathertightness issues, increase seismic resilience, and increase sustainability.

This includes a full re-roof and re-clad of the building, repair work on existing timber joinery and a full replacement of existing aluminium joinery, an upgrade of stormwater drainage, installation of seismic bracing and installation of solar panels.

The mature tree at the front of the hall will also be removed and a replacement tree will be planted.

Additionally, the seismic strengthening of the facility will ensure that the building meets the legislative requirements for the potential of future use as a Civil Defence Centre.

This necessary work will ensure longevity of these key community facilities, creating a weatherproof, stable, and more sustainable building.

Services and events

Hall users, Titirangi Plunket and Titirangi Library will be affected by the refurbishment and have been directed to alternative spaces.

Titirangi Playcentre, Titirangi Community House and Titirangi RSA remain unaffected.

It is anticipated that the monthly Titirangi market will occur outdoors on the site in a limited capacity.

The 2026 Anzac Day celebrations are unlikely to be held at the site. Auckland Council is in contact with Titirangi RSA to find a solution.

Carparking

Council staff have worked closely with the contractors to minimise disruption to the carpark. The contractor will use approximately 16 carparks as part of the construction site, and a further 8 carparks will be utilised for the mobile library.

88 carparks, 79% of the total site, will remain available for public use.

Carparking plan: please note, the line marking shown is indicative, but the actual number of carparks have been verified.
