We run free workshops funded by Te Whatu Ora to support the community. We have recently developed a new training called 'Weathering the Storm' which is to help people impacted by severe weather events. Extreme weather events have a significant impact on properties and infrastructure, and also on people’s mental health.
Weathering the Storm helps participants manage the stress and heightened emotions associated with severe weather. The workshop explores weather-related anxiety and the range of impacts extreme weather can have on individuals, whānau and communities.
Participants will discover the emotional phases of a disaster, how to manage anxiety and distress, and ways to build resilience. You’ll also get practical advice on how to support others, tips for reducing weather-related anxiety, and tools to help build resilience for the future.
Weathering the Storm participants will explore the mental health impacts of extreme weather events, discuss how communities are impacted by natural disasters, and examine the unequal impacts of extreme weather on different sectors of society.
You’ll learn how to navigate the uncertainty of disaster recovery, support children and others through effective communication, and get tools and tips to help reduce weather-related anxiety.
After attending Weathering the Storm, participants will be able to understand weather-related anxiety and use tools to build resilience and reduce the impact of anxiety.
Weathering the Storm is designed for adults 18 years old and over.
