Rodney Local Board has examined the results of cycling and walking path feasibility studies from its greenways plans and is now deciding which paths will go on to the design and consenting stage.
Parks and recreation committee chair Brent Bailey says the board needs to consider which paths represent the best value for money when each path will take years to develop.
“Connecting green open spaces and residential areas delivers a network of shared walking and cycling routes.
"Some paths can be built in sections to eventually inter-connect, but some paths will cost millions because of challenging topography that requires bridges and boardwalks.
“These projects will take commitment, determination and time. Once complete, our communities will have created something that will serve future generations well.”
Proposed paths:
- Kumeū-Huapai: A shared path linking Esplanade Reserve, Kumeū River and town centre.
- Omaha: Several routes around Omaha sandspit, including alternatives to access Taniko wetlands and a route linking Omaha Drive and the golf club.
- Riverhead: A shared path linking Riverhead War Memorial Park to Rangitopuni Creek via unformed roads including Victoria and George streets, Sussex Terrace and Kent Street.
- Wellsford: Routes around and within Wellsford Centennial Park, including links with Matheson and Centennial Park roads.
Later this year, the board will decide which paths go to the design stage, which progresses a path concept through to ready-to-build plans with cost estimates.
While $190,000 has been allocated to the design stage, the board will need to secure funding for construction.
