Councillor stresses importance of Emergency Budget
Rodney Ward Councillor Greg Sayers

Consultation on Auckland Council’s Emergency Budget is now open with Aucklanders being asked to have their say on two rates increase options; a rates rise of 2.5 per cent or a rates rise of 3.5 per cent.

Rodney Councillor Greg Sayers stresses that this consultation is as important as any that he has been involved in during his four years as a councillor.

“COVID-19 could cost Auckland Council more than half a billion dollars in reduced revenue in the next financial year. As a result, the organisation is now faced with hard decisions to balance the budget. So, for the first time ever, the council is consulting with Aucklanders on an ‘Emergency’ Budget for 2020/2021.

"These are unprecedented times, and while there will be difficult choices, there is the opportunity to make an impact on the future of Rodney and the wider region,” says Councillor Sayers.

“Together we can rise to the challenge of reducing our costs while still providing the services Aucklanders need and value, like the five well-loved libraries we have here in Rodney. Yes, the council will have less money coming in, and this means less money and an impact on Auckland and the essential services that Rodney relies on. That’s why I’m encouraging everyone to give their feedback on this consultation.”

Councillor Sayers also encourages Aucklanders to provide feedback on the Covid-19 rates postponement scheme outlined in consultation documents.

“One way we can help Aucklanders in need is by enabling them to defer their rates payments,” explains Councillor Sayers.

“The council is hoping that this kind of targeted assistance will help those experiencing genuine hardship as a result of COVID-19.”

“Please do have your say on the budget. Aucklanders are facing an extraordinary challenge, but I believe that together, we can help Rodney and our region to recover.”

Consultation is open now until 19 June 2020. Visit Akhaveyoursay.nz/emergency-budget to have your say.
