As we look ahead to the completion of Auckland’s new underground train system, Auckland Council and City Rail Link are working together to ensure the streets and spaces around the Waitematā Station are upgraded and ready for the expected influx of people.
This week works have started to reinstate the Waitematā Station (Britomart) plaza, and complete the streetscape upgrade of Tyler Street, between Te Komititanga and Commerce Street. This upgrade will contribute to the network of high-quality shared spaces and laneways, that will greet people as they exit the Waitematā Station and move through the city.
The Waitematā Station plaza will be another attractive meeting place for people, with easy access in and out of the central city area.
Like the transformed Galway Street, Tyler Street will be an inclusive and safe shared space for people.
These upgrades are guided by the City Centre Masterplan which envisions a pedestrian-scale city full of beautiful public spaces.
Construction information
John Fillmore Contracting (JFC) will be delivering the project on behalf of Auckland Council, and we expect the works to take up to 18 months. JFC are experienced in the delivery of complex streetscape projects in the city centre.
Auckland Council and JFC are committed to managing the impacts of construction on people who are living, working, and travelling through the area. More information on this project can be found at Progress AKL.
More on the design
The plaza has been designed in partnership with mana whenua and reflects the history of the Waitematā foreshore, both past and present.
Eight native trees will be planted around the edge of the plaza. There will also be a large central seating area, which will be a focal point for people to gather. Along with the trees, seats and bicycle racks, bollards will be installed around the plaza edge to prevent unauthorised vehicle access.
