Illegal dumping is an issue for every Auckland community and the Maungakiekie-Tāmaki area is no exception.
Auckland Council has invested heavily in public awareness and prevention campaigns, but there are still many ‘hot spots’ for illegal waste dumping. Bags of household rubbish and discarded furniture are the most common illegally dumped items.
“Dumping rubbish is illegal and can result in a hefty fine. But it's also irresponsible because our community use those spaces to live and play,” says Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board Chair, Chris Makoare.
“Our waste is our responsibility. We need to work together to keep our neighbourhoods safe and pleasant places to live.”
How you can help reduce illegal dumping in your area:
- Report it when you see it: 0800 NO DUMP (0800 663 867)
- Recycle/repurpose/repair
- Book in an organic collection
- Use your kerbside wheelie bins
- Take items to a transfer station
- Help whānau take responsibility
